About Home-Start East Lothian

Home-Start East Lothian offers befriending support along with practical and emotional advice in the homes of families who are having difficulties managing parenting for a variety of different reasons.

We are a small staff team consisting of a manager, 2 co-ordinators, 2 administrators, 2 family support workers, a First 1001 Day Family Support Worker and a Breastfeeding Peer Support Co-ordinator

We recruit and train volunteers to support families within their own homes

Quote from Home-Start East Lothian trustee
Alex Mackay - Chair

I have been a board member since the end of 2021 and became Chair in January 2023. It is
a great pleasure to support the work of Home-Start East Lothian and see the amazing work that the staff
and volunteers do to support families across the county.

Elaine Johnston - Treasurer

“I joined the Board of Homestart East Lothian at the end of 2013. I have worked in Third Sector organisations for over 30 years. I have met a number of our fantastic volunteers and am always impressed with the skill, knowledge and commitment they bring to their role in supporting families. I am delighted to be part of such a great organisation.”

Lynne Porteous

I became a Trustee of Home Start East Lothian in January 2023, having previously been a Home Start volunteer.

My background is in finance, working with public and third sector charity organisations. I have always had an interest in the welfare of children and families which fits well with the Home Start ethos.

Penny Morriss

I’ve been working in the third sector in Scotland now for nearly 20 years, with a background in community development, placemaking and anti-poverty work.  I joined the Board in 2024, and am delighted to be able to support our brilliant staff and volunteers in their important work.

Home-Start East Lothian is a corner-stone organisation in the country, supporting families across East Lothian communities, and it’s a real honour to contribute to the worko of the organisation.

Melissa Bell

I’m part of the trustee team because I believe in the work Home Start East Lothian does and the way it supports families. Alongside my role as Child Protection Lead, being a trustee allows me to play my part in making sure the organisation is safe, well run and true to its values. I’m a qualified social worker and currently work as a policy advisor in social work education, so staying connected to practice really matters to me. Being involved with Home Start helps keep me grounded in what families, volunteers and communities are experiencing day to day.

Alison Brown

I am delighted to join the Board of Homestart. I was previously supported by Homestart when my son was little. This was a tricky time for us as a family and having a volunteer to play with my son and also give me a break was incredibly valuable at a time when everything felt overwhelming and he was barely sleeping. I now work and volunteer for a couple of local charities and thought that I would like to give back in some small way to the charity that supported us when we were at a low point.

Imogen Young

I decided to join the Home-Start East Lothian Board of Trustees as a way of learning more about how the amazing work that Home-Start East Lothian do.  I work for another charity and feel inspired to give some time to other organisations that are supporting children and families.

Fiona Smith

I’ve been a Board Member since July 2025, and it’s a privilege to be part of the Home Start East Lothian team who do such amazing work. I was motivated to join because I believe in the power of early family support to transform lives, and I wanted to play a role in helping Home Start continue making that difference in our community.

James Reith

I grew up in East Lothian, just outside Haddington. I am excited to join a charity as a trustee such as Home-Start East Lothian, which helps families get a good start in their journey. I was privileged enough to have had a happy childhood. I look forward to contributing, even in a small way, to an organisation whose goal is to help achieve that for parents and children across East Lothian.

Lyn Marshall

Having volunteered with Home-Start many years ago, I saw first-hand the fantastic support this organisation provides and the meaningful difference it can make to families. I am delighted to have become a Trustee of Home-Start East Lothian and to help the charity continue its valuable work.
